I ask this question because I am a father with a son who is 5. If I did not have a child I would not be in any position to even think about such a question. We now live in a culture and generation of technology and social media.
When I was growing up we did not even have computers or such technology. I was born in 1965. In my school years there were no computers at all, not until I got to college. In college email was just being introduced, that was in 1993 when I was working on my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. That was a brand new concept. Now everything has changed.
When we were kids we would go outside and play, that’s all we knew and that was all we had, there was no other choice. We had to go outside and find things to do to keep us busy, which we enjoyed and had a great time.
I ask you this question because technology & social media is now raising a generation. Which I happen to think is not a good thing, let me explain.
I do agree that technology is a good tool to help us do certain things, there is nothing wrong with that. However now there is an entertainment aspect of technology that is now a distraction for kids.
Instead of living life in the outside world with other people they are now living in an virtual world of technology & social media. Spending less time learning real social skills that help them deal with people face to face. All this entertaining technology is a distraction form the real world and reality.
Social media, I won’t name the sites you can guess which one’s are also a diversion from reality. I am personally not impressed with the social media craze, I think it is all over rated. You build real friendships face to face not through a website.
Kids are now learning about life through their computers. I personally think it is taking away from the real life experience they deserve. Our kids deserve better than just a computer where they can entertain themselves and make fake friends.
As I mentioned earlier I have a son who is 5. For now we keep him away from all the techno-gadgets. I know that someday he will be influenced by it all but not while he is still so young. He sees me and my wife on the computer and he watches some kids programs on it also. So he knows of the computer.
We just don’t want him to be raised by it in his formidable years. We also have no gaming systems either. We keep him away from it all for now, later in life he can decide for himself. For now it is our decision and we think it is the right one for now.
Go ahead and let us know what you think whether it is positive or negative your feedback is welcome.
