Learning To Sew With Sewing Machine Update (Part 2)

how to use a sewing machine

Things were not going very well so I took about a month off from learning how to sew with the sewing machine. I was getting stressed out and frustrated not being able to progress as fast as I expected. So I just walked away from it. I did not look forward to doing any sewing again, however I knew I had to eventually.

Me and my wife needed to start getting ready for our first arts and crafts coming up in a few weeks. It would be our first time going public with our new designs. We were getting excited. The show is on May 1st for Mother’s day. And then it hit me that I would have to get on the sewing machine again to help make more cookie bears stuffed animals and other designs. I was not looking forward to it knowing how frustrated I would probably get again.

I knew I would have to use the sewing machine to help get ready for the show. My wife designs and decorates the projects and I sew using the sewing machine. So I sat down in quite reserve anticipating the stress and frustration.

Something very strange happened, it all came together. Taking a few weeks off actually helped the process. All of a suuden I started sewing with control and confidence. Before I was pushing and pulling the fabric through the machine and I could not control the speed.

What I figured out was that the machine moves the fabric and all I have to do is direct the fabric to get the stitch where I want it. That was a sewing revelation. I could also control the speed a little better. I could actually sew with control, boy did that feel good. This was a huge accomplishment, it felt exilerating and energizing.

I still need to practice controlling the speed better because the speed of the machine also controls the speed that the fabic moves. It is all one process. At least now I have progressed in the right direction and it feeks good. Of course it would have helped if I would started sewing straight lines first. But I started out sewing angles and curves which I think is advanced sewing for seasoned veterans not beginners like myself.

All in all it is now going pretty good. Of course I still need lots of practice. The more I sew the better I will get. I still have a lot of sewing to do to get ready for our first show. Once I get really good I am going to make my own shirt which I already have a design I am going to do. A kind of unique design I do not see in the mainstream for men’s shirts.
